Fish & Tank Recommendations

While the basics of fish training are easy to do, and nearly all fish are capable of learning, there are a few basic "qualifications" you should consider before you begin. Think of this as the Fish School entrance exam.

Most types of fish can learn at least some of the Fish School tricks. Betta, Goldfish (common and fancy), Oscars and Parrot Cichlids have all be trained using the techniques described in the Fish School Training System.

But just like people, some fish are better at certain subjects than others. In other words, certain tricks are easier for some fish, and some species of fish. For example, fetch training is easier for Oscars, Parrotfish and other Cichlids that naturally like to pick up and carry gravel. Other species, like Goldfish typically don't carry gravel around, so may find this behavior more difficult to learn. Similarly, bettas some fancy goldfish aren't very athletic, and so may have trouble jumping out of the water or pushing a soccer ball! If you fish is having trouble with a certain trick, try a different one.

Another important factor contributes to success Fish School is the fish's size. A minimum fish size of about 2 inches seems to be a necessary for fish to learn - smaller than that and they don't seem to have the necessary brainpower.

Certain tricks, like swimming through the hoop, are easy for fish as small as 1½ inches. Others, like soccer, require fish big and strong enough to push the ball along the bottom of the tank. This seems to require fish at least 2 ½ to 3 inches long.

It is important for successful training to be able to reward the good behavior of individual fish. This is difficult in a tank that has lots of fish in it - since they will all compete for the food reward. This does not pose too much of a problem in tanks with 1-3 fish, but can be an issue in tanks with four or more fish. If your tank has lots of fish, you might consider buying a small "training tank", or a tank divider at your local pet store. This will provide a private classroom in which your fish can learn.

Remember, only happy and healthy fish learn well. It is critical to take good care of your fish. One important part of taking good care of your fish is to have a tank that is big enough for both your fish, and the fish school training equipment. We recommend a minimum tank size of 3 gallons, but 5-10 gallons or larger is even better.
